Event: Day Workshop: Towards Responsible World Citizenship.
Facilitator: Ibrahim Issa, Co-Director of Hope Flowers School, Bethlehem.
Venue: Meeting Room, Quaker Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh, EH1 2JL.
Time: 9.30am for 10am-4.30pm.
Event Description: An interactive workshop using the “World Cafe technique” will be conducted to harvest our mutual understandings in how we could create a responsible world citizenship by starting implementing peace education and human rights based education in our society.
The workshop aims to engage teachers, parents, community leaders and ordinary people into active discussion aiming to develop strategies about how to create a culture of peace in their societies through schools and how they as members of the global village can take responsibility to create world peace.
The workshop will address how to help schools manage educational under-attainment, post-traumatic stress, disruption in class, bullying and similar issues. It gives an opportunity to learn from our experiences, and through sharing collective wisdom it will increase our knowledge and develop tools with which to address these problems at the point when such patterns form, and before they consolidate into frustration, beliefs and habits that can fuel future conflict.
Ordinary people think that they cannot influence international policy and practice, but they can do a lot to work on their own attitudes and values, thus strengthening their culture and its capacity to withstand hardship and assault without needing to resort to violence.
The Hope Flowers School, Bethlehem, provides a concrete example of this work. No peace program can develop without the support of wider society, and this training encourages cooperation between schools and families. To reach out to a wider critical mass in Palestinian society, we show teachers how to organize community-based programs and form parental support groups. For example, with our World Café we organize monthly seminars for parents and the community, bringing moderate Muslim leaders and interesting speakers to talk about social alternatives and encourage meaningful conversation about violence, terrorism, civic society and education in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.
