Mark Baugh describes himself as a White British Queer Cis-male. The pronouns he uses are he/him.
“Is it safe?” A question Mark asked for the first 40 years of his life. It invariably wasn’t. Starting life in a mining community in Derbyshire was challenging with alcohol and domestic violence impacting any sense of safety and emerging sense of self. The bullying started at age 11 for 5 tortuous years just for being different from other boys. He wondered, “Why he had been born?” and “What was the point?”. The seeds of suicidal ideation were being sown. Education suffered, Grades were not met for the medical aspirations. Another way had to be found to prove worth. It was a long hard route. Estranged father hung himself when Mark was 21. He started a relationship with a woman he married and had a daughter with. Age 36, with burnout from a demanding materialistic career, Mark was on the threshold of his own suicide. He was saved by a little quiet voice inside persistently urging him to seek help from the GP.
Referred for urgent psychotherapy to start the process of turning the self-hatred, due to internalised homophobia and shame, to self-love, an old life was dying. That death process took nearly 4 years. Within a 6 month period Mark left his wife and daughter, was made redundant, sold his Mercedes Benz, went to live in a house share and ended up on benefits - a new life was beginning.
Having a platform of confidence gained through talking therapy, Mark set off on a quest to know himself more deeply and fully, experiencing himself through energy work, breathwork, bodywork, medicine work and meditation, gaining an appreciation for the interconnectedness of things and a growing sense of reverence for the Organising Principle.
Now when considering the questions “Why am I here?” and “What’s the point?” Mark says:
“To know myself, all of my light and shadow because when I own both through that process there is less pain being projected out and spread around. When there is a critical mass of individuals doing the same I believe there will be a much needed tipping point in human consciousness. I am in service to that.”

Mark Baugh: Mark met his husband in London in 2006 and now stewards a retreat centre in Scotland where he offers Holotropic Breathwork. He is an Associate member of The Institute of Psychedelic Therapy and has recently completed their 2 year Depth Relational Process Training.
Phyllida Anam Aire: I just love being a fully paid-up participant in this amazing drama of Life. Somehow, I don’t see it as MY Life rather, I have the awful privilege of being called to experience a very short spiral in this dramatic and dynamic mystery of Love made flesh.
Nearing my 80th birthday is such a rich and splendid privilege, one that fills me with deep gratitude to Life Itself. Joy has been a constant companion these past years.
