Re-Purposing ~ Place-Making ~ Well-Being
Placemaking – Spirit@Work?
Place is primal, and potent; the sense of place is almost like a sixth sense. The invitation is to explore the territory beyond ordinary everyday place, and its grounding of our lives. What and who is involved in the making of place? What about the act of placemaking, by placemakers, as another arena of manifestation of Spirit@Work? The forum will be open to a range of perspectives and contexts based on the lived experience of participants, feeling into the territory between the personal and the universal; placemaking as a progression of our sense-making and meaning-making. Making places we might all call home. Heart-and-soul-work. Community spirit at work. Whole-making work – opening into the realms of wellbeing, the next forum focus.
Format: Each forum will consist of an inquiry into different forms of Spirit@Work. The two hours will be programmed in three roughly equal segments – divergence, emergence and convergence.
The first will focus on surfacing a diversity of possible perspectives, based on several brief invited provocations (mini-keynote presentations), supplemented by volunteered participant offerings.
These in turn will form the basis for small-group break-out discussions focused on emergence of new perspectives or emphases, to be reported in the final plenary.
Aided by a few designated ‘key listener’ offerings, the closing segment will aim for some convergence (common-meaning-making) around themes and questions worth pursuing further, perhaps in a longer future ‘day conference’ format.
Conversation Starters [Mini-Keynote Presenters]
Kate Carter: Dr Kate Carter is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture, Technology and Environment at the University of Edinburgh. An early interest in climate responsive architecture has heavily influenced her research. She has led EPSRC and Government funded research in low energy design and the understanding of sustainability. Her interests include sustainable architecture, low carbon construction, and building and energy information modelling.
Nick Walker: Nick is an Architect and Team Lead with Collective Architecture, a practice of over 50 people with studios in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Collective Architecture is an employee-owned company, predominately working on projects with a socially motivated agenda. Nick has been a part-time studio design tutor at the Mack for 18 years, currently teaching in Stage 4 within the postgraduate programme. Nick is also part of the Advisory Panel for the Academy of Urbanism Scotland and an external examiner at Northumbria University, Newcastle. This has also led him to becoming involved with the RIBA North East’s EDI initiative ‘Change the Record’ for which he is an advocate.
Diarmaid Lawlor: Diarmaid is the Associate Director for place at the Scottish Futures Trust. He was previously Head of Urbanism with Architecture and Design Scotland. An urbanist, with a multi disciplinary background, he has worked on projects involving the shaping and implementation of change for clients in Ireland, the UK and Europe, for the public, private and tertiary sectors. He has almost 20 years' experience of helping clients make well informed decisions about complex, connected urban policy and investment challenges. He is an educator, communicator and collaborator who writes and speaks on creative approaches to making better places.
Petra Biberbach: Petra Biberbach is Chief Executive of award-winning national charity, PAS. With a career spanning public, private and third sector, Petra brings a wealth of expertise to the post in the fields of planning, sustainable development, renewable energy, community engagement and research. Petra is currently the Vice Chair of LINK Group.
Conversation Extenders [Key-Note Listeners]
John Howie: John is a national organisational lead in health improvement with over 20 year’s public health experience. He is currently responsible for leading Public Health Scotland’s place and place standard portfolios with roles extending to various chairing and advisory functions and is also lead for Public Health Scotland’s application to host a new global Collaborating Centre for Place.
Karen Lawson: Karen is Collaborative Learning Lead within Scottish Government and a member of the Collective Leadership for Scotland Team. She has a role to develop collaborative and innovation approaches to support public service transformation and draws creatively from her background in social work and education. She currently has responsibility for the Fire Starter and Creative Bravery Festivals as well as supporting the development of systems leadership in addressing complex issues.
Marilyn Hamilton: PhD, Founder Integral City Meshworks; author Integral City Book Series, co-host Cities Rising for Regenerative World/Humanity Rising & curator Urban Hub 20, City Change in VUCA World co-evolves human hives as Gaia’s Reflective Organs. She designs courses and degrees for Citizens, Civic Managers, Biz/Innovators, 3rd Sector. She is/was member/director, CEO, COO, CFO and CIO in the private and NFP sectors including Integral Europe Academic Consortium. www.integralcity.com
Russell McLarty: Over 8 years Russell was an active chair of 'Royston Road Project' in Glasgow's East End involved in arts-led community development. He was also Coordinator of a 3-year Pilot Project, ‘Chance to Thrive’, which provided volunteer mentors to 8 Priority Areas Churches helping them build vision and develop partnership work.
Lesley Reid: Lesley Reid lives in Portobello, by the seaside, in Edinburgh and works in Public Health in NHS Lothian. Professionally and personally she is involved in Community Planning and Community Development.
