Event Description: A day retreat and workshop to enable us to re-connect with the land and with the movements of the Spirit in ourselves.
The retreat is an opportunity to hear some of the sounds from the holy and healing wells of Scotland and Ireland, and to find out about them through story and poetry. From a world of wandering saints and places of power, we will begin to think about our own life experience and its setting today. There will be a quiet time for centering and contemplation.
Valerie will facilitate the workshop as a creative space for us to reflect upon our own places of inspiration. Writing or mapping a part of our life story, we will put into words the way in which the land is important to us on our spiritual journey.
Valerie Gillies is a poet who received a Creative Scotland Award to travel and write her book, The Spring Teller, about the springs and wells of Scotland and Ireland, their folklore, history and landscape, and how they continue to be visited by people today. She is a former Edinburgh Makar, poet laureate to the city, who has taught creative writing in schools, universities, and in the hospital arts. Currently she facilitates the Creative Writing and Journaling Workshops at Maggie’s Cancer Centre, Edinburgh.
Her most recent book, The Cream of the Well: New and Selected Poems, is published by Luath in 2015. Valerie is a spiritual director with the Epiphany Group and a member of Contemplative Outreach.
