Event Description: The practice of Dhikr (Remembrance of God) is a traditional Sufi method of purifying the soul to reach a state of oneness with the Divine Reality. The Distinguished Naqshbandi Order recite the Khatm ul-Khwajagan (Litany of the Masters), a traditional formulation of prayer, chanting, and recitation under the guidance of the Shaykh (Mawlana Shaykh Nazim). Members of the Naqshbandi community in Scotland meet regularly to recite Dhikr, and they are delighted to welcome the wider public to this event. We were blessed last year by a visit to the Salisbury Centre by Shaykh Nazim’s eldest son and successor, Shaykh Mehmet Adil ar-Rabbani. God willing, his blessings will be reaching our hearts at this event. Men, women and children of all backgrounds are welcome. Food will be served after.

Event Description: Described by The Times as “complex, beautiful, revelatory”, Faith is a triptych that intimately observes the act of worship of the three religions of Jerusalem. The film is set in the wilderness of the Judean desert, where, far from the built and contested territories, an Orthodox Jew, a Greek Orthodox Christian and a Sunni Muslim perform their morning prayers. Questioning segregation while celebrating difference, Faith contemplates issues of human belief, inviting reflection on one of the most tragic, world resonating conflicts that persist in this new century.
Following the screening, Isabel Rocamora will reflect on the thematic intentions and making of her project through a discussion of philosophies which accompany her conceptual process. The issues of imaging, belief as existential mood, and otherness will be considered in dialogue with Jean-Luc Marion’s thoughts on the religious icon, Martin Heidegger’s early ontology and the ethics of alterity as defined by Emmanuel Levinas.
Isabel Rocamora is an artist filmmaker, scholar and lecturer. Awarded internationally, her work can be seen in museums and filmothèques as well as on art broadcast. Her films have been exhibited at Centre for Contemporary Art Palazzo Strozzi, Florence; the National Museum of Photography, Copenhagen; the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Israel; and the Bologna Museum of Modern Art, among other venues. Following solo shows at Senda Gallery in Barcelona and the Koffler Gallery in Toronto, Rocamora’s project Faith was recently exhibited at Edinburgh’s Summerhall Galleries, captivating a large number of visitors from diverse backgrounds and communities. Isabel has given talks on the moving image at the universities of Oxford, Glasgow, Dundee, Frankfurt (Goethe University) and Brown.

Event: Tu b'shvat seder. Tu b'shvat is the New Year for trees and a seder is a communal meal.

Event Description: We will be having a bring and share supper, during which we will have various readings relating to Tu b'shvat and also eating various different fruits from different trees. There is a strong environmental theme to Tu b'shvat, so many of the readings relate to this. If you would like to come, please bring along a non-meat dish to share (vegetarian food is easiest!).

Event Description: An invitation for the public to experience a live Muslim call to prayer (Adhaan) and observe the congregational prayer (Salaah) as it is performed. The call to prayer will be give around 5.25pm and the prayer performed shortly after that at around 5.30pm. We kindly ask that guests arrive in good time around 5pm to be situated in the prayer hall and minimise any potential disturbance of the worshippers.
