Event Description: This Day Conference will look at issues associated with Patrick Geddes, ‘spirit-in-action’, ‘the place of spirit in his own work’. and 'the nature' of his ‘spirit-at-work’. What is still to be learned, from Geddes then, for our work in the world today? Framed as ‘a learning journey’ or as ‘an inspiration inquiry’… traversing 'the world without' and 'the world within’…, and the evening event will celebrate writings and creativity associated with the theme.

Title: The Spirit of Renewal – Riddle’s Court and conservative surgery today: a case study.
Description: 130 years after the unveiling of a painted ceiling for the students of Patrick Geddes’ University Hall, Riddle’s Court has reopened as the Patrick Geddes Centre in the heart of Edinburgh’s medieval Old Town. The restoration of the building acts as both an example of Geddes’ approach to renewal and as a beacon of inspiration for how the city’s built heritage might be managed in a time of rapid development and change.
This presentation will illustrate how the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust have followed in the footsteps of Geddes; not only by saving an iconic building but by securing its civic use as a place of learning and education for all.
Bio: Russell Clegg is the Education Officer for the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust, based at the Patrick Geddes Centre. He came to the Trust in 2015 following a career in education and heritage.

Biog: Petra Biberbach is Chief Executive of award-winning national charity, PAS. With a career spanning public, private and third sector, Petra brings a wealth of expertise to the post in the fields of planning, sustainable development, renewable energy, community engagement and research.
Petra is serving her second term as a board member of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority and was elected as Convenor of the Planning Committee. She is the Vice Chair of LINK Group and a non-executive director at Zero Waste Scotland. Petra served on the Independent Review of the Scottish Planning System.
Petra has one daughter and one son. She enjoys golf, gardening, cycling, art and still singing along to Leonard Cohen!

Title: My Life with Patrick Geddes.
Biog: Roger Kelly was born in Edinburgh, married to Scottish potter Jane Kelly, with a large extended family. Was educated here in Edinburgh, in Manchester, and studied town planning at Newcastle University. employed as planning adviser at Kent County Council and for many years at The Scottish Development Department, Scottish Executive. Active in local futures, history, culture, identity, food supply and business ethics. Past Convener of the Royal Town Planning Institute in Scotland, advisor to the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund since its inception a decade ago, founder of the Penicuik Community Development Trust and its Lost Garden of Penicuik Project, the Notable Scottish Women Project, Penicuik Storehouse Project, The Great Polish Map of Scotland Restoration at Eddleston, the Gorebridge Station Restoration Trust. Roger is a founding trustee of the Saltire Society Trust. In the last decade he and Jane hosted and made friends with 170 working guests from around the world.
